Helen Russell - Gifted & Talented

Helen Russell, from Evesham, emerged victorious on home soil, winning the gold medal at the European Middle Distance Quadrathlon Championships.

Competing against athletes from Hungary, Spain, Belgium and the United Kingdom, Russell showcased her exceptional skills in the race that was held in Brigg, Lincolnshire. The event followed a middle-distance format, and included a 1,500m river swim, a 7km kayak legm a 30km bike ride, and a 10km run.

Russell initially exited the River Ancholme in second place but quickly distanced herself from the competition during the bike leg. Demonstrating remarkable prowess, she achieved the fastest times in both the kayak and run legs, securing her position as the top female participant overall and within the 40 to 50-hears-old age group.

Expressing her elation, Russell stated, “I am over the moon to take this win so late in my Quadrathlon career and I am grateful for all the support I have received to help me train, prepare and achieve this result.”

Gillian Melia took home the silver medal, whilst Liz Dawson earned the bronze medal, finishing behind Russell. Russell is affiliated with our Rivers Gifted and Talented Scheme, and serves as a British Canoeing She Paddles ambassador.

Russell is a versatile athlete, engaged in multiple different sports.
