On Tuesday 7th March, an event was held at Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre as part of England’s Football national #LetGirlsPlay campaign to give all girls equal access to give all girls equal access to football in schools by 2024.

91 girls from 8 Schools participated in the event:

  • Nunnery Wood High School

  • Bewdley School

  • Holy Trinity School

  • Baxter College

  • Catshill Middle School

  • Aston Fields Middle School

  • Droitwich Spa High School

  • Tudor Grange Academy Worcester

The girls participated in various activities - football skills in the Sports Hall, “Soccercise” and Strength + Conditioning on the Squash courts, a “Girls Talk” theory session in the studio and a Magic Mirror in the ‘lobby area’.

The girls taking part in football themed activities and empowering them to feel that they can play football.

Well done, girls!

Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnerships by England Football (BGFSPs) is a nationwide scheme with a goal to football in schools for girls into the mainstream. Supported by the Youth Sport Trust, the initiative will create a network of 300 BGFSPs by 2024, each with a dedicated education expert with knowledge and understanding of education and girls’ football in their local area.

As our national game, Barclays believes in the power of football and its ability to speak to the nation and create confidence and opportunities for young people. For example, 80% of girls show more confident behaviour having played football. Yet we know historically the opportunities to access the game haven’t been equal; 76% of men said they played football in PE lessons at school, yet only 19% of women said they had the chance to play**.  That is something should change, and this is why Barclay’s are putting their name behind this commitment.

The Barclays investment will give girls the best chance to experience football in the PE curriculum, as well as the opportunity to participate, lead and compete – giving them the equal access to our much-loved national game as most boys currently enjoy.

The secret to achieving success via The Barclays Girls Football School Partnerships is being focused on five areas:

  • More girls being physically active with improved wellbeing

  • Embedding girls’ football in secondary schools

  • The growth in the women’s and girls’ football workforce

  • Making the game more inclusive for all

  • Collaboration with existing local football providers.
