Alex Doherty | Gifted & Talented
Alex is a Rivers Gifted & Talented member with his specialist-sport being Duathlon. Duathlon is an athletic event consisting of 3 stages of competition. The events tend to begin with a section of running, followed by a cycling section, followed by another running section (similar to triathlons).
This year, Alex has been competing in a few different international competitions & we were excited to find out how he’d done. Here’s what he had to say when we asked him - Alex said: “It’s been such an amazing year, my best year yet in fact and I wanted to give you an update on everything that’s happened. When I last spoke to I was 5 weeks out from the Duathlon world championships for Team GB. I was ecstatic to get the overall win and come back with my 2nd world championship gold medal.”
“This year I didn’t compete at the World champs due to an injury, however last month at the European Championships Bilbao I came first overall to take my 3rd European Championship gold. This was particularly special to me as earlier in the year I suffered with a stress fracture and genuinely thought I wouldn’t come back from it.”
Alex has also had an outstanding year achieving his personal bests across a different races:
10 mile TT (cycling) personal best: 18:14 (32.9mph)
10k running personal best: 33:09
5k running personal best: 15:47
Next year, Alex will be channelling his focus on the World, European and British Duathlon championships along with the National 10 mile and 25 mile TT cycling championships.
“Thank you so so much for your support over the years, I’m very grateful for all your help. With the injuries I’ve had in the past few years building strength regularly at Rivers will be a real injury preventer, so I will be putting a lot of my focus in this area.”
