Wychavon’s leisure centres have received a funding boost of more than £288,000 as they prepare to reopen their doors to customers. The money comes from the Government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund, which supports the recovery of publicly owned leisure centres and gyms from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wychavon Leisure, which runs the council’s leisure centres, is preparing to open their doors on 12 April as part of the Government’s lockdown easing road map.

Swimming pools at all three sites – including Pershore following a refurbishment – will be open for lane swimming as well as family and parent and toddler sessions. Gyms will also be open as well as racket sports for people in the same household and outdoor classes. Indoor group exercise classes won’t be available until at least the 17 May and health suites, children’s parties and toddler soft play sessions not until at least 21 June.

Safety measures will remain in place including mask wearing in communal areas, 2 metre social distancing and online pre-booking.

There is more good news as Droitwich Lido will be opening for the summer season earlier than usual with 1 May pencilled in as the date when swimmers will be welcomed back. More details will be released nearer the time.

Cllr Chris Day, Executive Board Member with responsibility for leisure, said: “I’m delighted we have been able to secure this money which will support Wychavon leisure as they get ready for reopening on 12 April. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on all of us and our leisure centres have an important role to play in helping us get back to an active lifestyle that supports our mental and physical wellbeing.”

Stuart Megarry, Chair of Wychavon Leisure said ‘This is great news for Wychavon Leisure and we would like to thank the Council for their support in securing this funding. Our Rivers centres are at the heart of our communities and we look forward to welcoming customers back through our doors.
